Vegan Braised Tofu Recipe

This Vegan Braised Tofu recipe is a tasty and simple plant-based meal that is ideal for a busy weeknight. The tofu is seared first to give it a nice texture, then simmered in a savory sauce with vegetables until it's flavorful. Serve it with rice or noodles for a full meal.

Instructions

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Cook until the tofu is browned on both sides, about 3 minutes per side.
  • Set the tofu aside after removing it from the skillet.
  • In the skillet, combine the sliced onion, minced garlic, and sliced red bell pepper.
  • Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
  • Whisk together the vegetable broth, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and cornstarch in a small bowl.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil in the skillet with the vegetables.
  • Reduce the heat to low and reintroduce the tofu to the skillet.
  • Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and the tofu is thoroughly heated.
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Serve immediately, topped with sesame seeds and green onions.
